Google Search Console Can Now Track Social Media Content: What Business Owners Need to Know

Kirsten Johnson, Founder of Reverie

Search is no longer limited to traditional website pages.

People may now discover your business through a blog post, Google Business Profile, YouTube video, Instagram post, TikTok video, online review, or another piece of content connected to your brand.

Google recently made an important update that reflects this shift: businesses and creators can now add certain social media accounts as properties inside Google Search Console.

This means Google Search Console can provide information about how content from Instagram, TikTok, X, and YouTube is appearing and performing across Google Search.

It may sound technical, but the larger message is simple:

Your social media content can be part of how people find your business through Google.

What Is Google Search Console?

Google Search Console is a free tool that helps business owners understand how their website and content perform in Google Search.

It can show information such as:

  • The searches people use to find your business

  • How often your website appears in search results

  • How many people click through to your website

  • Which pages are receiving the most visibility

  • Whether Google is having trouble finding or reading parts of your website

  • How your visibility changes over time

Google Search Console also helps identify indexing, technical, and website-performance issues that may affect how well a business appears in search.

Without it, a business may have very little insight into what Google sees, what is working, or what needs to be improved.

What Changed?

Google Search Console has introduced a new feature called platform properties.

Businesses and creators can now connect individual accounts or channels from:

  • Instagram

  • TikTok

  • X

  • YouTube

Once an account is connected and verified, Google Search Console may provide information about:

  • The Google searches that lead people to social content

  • The posts or videos receiving the most visibility

  • Impressions in Google Search

  • Clicks from Google

  • Average click-through rate

  • Average search position

  • Recent traffic and performance trends

Each account must be added and verified as its own property. Google has also said the feature is being introduced gradually, so it may not appear in every Search Console account immediately.

What This Update Does—and Does Not—Measure

This distinction is important.

The new reports show how your social content performs on Google. They do not replace the analytics provided by Instagram, TikTok, X, or YouTube.

For example, Google Search Console may show that an Instagram post appeared in a Google search result and received a click. It will not show every time someone viewed that post while scrolling through Instagram.

This gives businesses a different type of information: insight into whether social media content is helping people discover the brand outside the original social platform.

Why This Matters for Local Businesses

This update reinforces something we have been talking about with our clients for some time:

Online visibility is no longer created in only one place.

Your website is still an essential part of your digital foundation. It gives your business a space you control and helps Google clearly understand your services, experience, locations, and authority.

However, your larger search presence may also include:

  • Google Business Profile

  • Social media content

  • Videos

  • Reviews

  • Helpful website content

  • Local service pages

  • Business listings

  • Paid advertising

  • Mentions and links from other websites

These pieces should not operate as completely separate marketing activities. When they are structured intentionally, they can support one another and create a clearer, more trustworthy presence for both Google and potential customers.

The new Search Console reporting gives businesses another way to understand how those pieces are working together.

What Should Your Business Do Next?

The appropriate next step depends on whether your business already has Google Search Console properly installed and verified.

If You Do Not Have Google Search Console

The first priority is setting it up correctly.

Google Search Console can help your business understand whether Google can find your website, which searches are creating visibility, and where opportunities or technical problems may exist.

Simply creating an account is not always enough. The correct website property needs to be verified, important users need appropriate access, the sitemap should be reviewed, and the data should be monitored over time.

Without a proper setup, your business may be missing information that could guide future SEO, website, and content decisions.

If You Already Have Google Search Console

Your existing setup should be reviewed to determine whether the new platform properties are available and which social accounts should be connected.

Each eligible Instagram, TikTok, X, or YouTube account must be added and authorized separately. It can then take several days for information to begin appearing in the reports.

Connecting the accounts is only the beginning. The information should also be reviewed to understand:

  • Which topics are creating search visibility

  • Which posts or videos are being discovered

  • What questions potential customers are asking

  • Where content could be improved or expanded

  • How social content can support website SEO and local visibility

The value is not simply having more data. The value comes from using that data to make clearer, more informed marketing decisions.

Does This Mean Your Business No Longer Needs a Website?

No.

Social platforms are valuable, but businesses do not own or fully control them. Features, algorithms, account access, and visibility can change at any time.

Your website remains the central place where you can clearly explain what you offer, establish trust, answer important questions, and guide people toward the next step.

This update does not make website SEO less important. Instead, it gives businesses an opportunity to understand how website content, social media, videos, and other digital assets contribute to a larger search strategy.

You Do Not Have to Figure This Out Alone

Most business owners do not know whether Google Search Console is installed correctly, who has access to it, or whether the information inside it is being used.

That is completely understandable.

You should not have to become an SEO specialist or spend hours navigating technical reports to understand whether your business is visible online.

The Reverie Creative Agency team can review your current Google Search Console setup, identify what is already connected, explain what may be missing, and help implement the appropriate next steps.

We can also evaluate how your website, Google Business Profile, social platforms, content, reviews, and other visibility efforts are working together.
