Here’s What Helped One Local Business Rank #1 Organically on Google
Kirsten Johnson, Founder of Reverie
What does it actually take to show up at the top of Google?
It’s one of the questions we hear most often from business owners — and understandably so. When someone searches for exactly what you offer, you want your business to be one of the first credible options they see.
Recently, we pulled up Google for one of our local clients and saw something we love seeing:
They were ranking #1 organically for an important local search.
Not through an ad.
Not because they paid Google for that position.
They were showing up organically because of the foundation that had been built over time.
So, How Did They Get There?
There wasn’t one magic SEO trick.
That’s important.
Strong organic visibility is usually the result of several pieces working together consistently:
A website that clearly explains what the business does
Content built around what real customers are searching for
Strong local relevance
Technical SEO that helps Google properly crawl and understand the website
Clear service and location information
A healthy online reputation
Google reviews and other trust signals
Ongoing monitoring and improvements based on actual search data
This particular result was the outcome of building those pieces together rather than chasing one keyword or looking for a quick shortcut.
And that distinction matters.
Ranking Organically Is Different From Running an Ad
When you search Google, you’ll often see sponsored results first.
Those businesses are paying for their placement through Google Ads.
Organic results appear because Google's systems have determined that those pages are relevant to the search.
Both paid and organic search can be valuable. We use both strategies for clients depending on their goals.
But when a business earns strong organic visibility, it can become an important long-term asset.
You aren't paying for every click to maintain that individual organic position.
Instead, you're building a stronger overall search presence.
This Didn’t Happen Overnight
SEO is ongoing work.
Search results change. Competitors make improvements. Google continues to evolve. New businesses enter the market. And the way people search is changing too.
That’s why we don’t treat SEO like a project where you optimize a website once and never touch it again.
The goal is to continually strengthen the signals that help both people and search engines understand your business.
For a local company, that may include:
Your Website
Your website needs to make it clear what you do, who you help, where you work, and what someone should do next.
Your Content
Helpful content gives Google more context about your expertise while answering the questions potential customers are already asking.
Your Local Presence
Your location information, Google Business Profile, service areas, local content, reviews, and overall reputation help establish where your business is relevant.
Your Authority
Google isn't evaluating your website in isolation. Your broader online presence can help reinforce that your business is established, credible, and connected to the services you say you provide.
Your Technical Foundation
Even strong content can struggle if Google has trouble crawling, indexing, or understanding the website.
SEO works best when these pieces support each other.
But Ranking #1 Isn’t Actually the End Goal
Seeing a client in the #1 organic position is exciting.
We absolutely celebrate it.
But there’s another part of this conversation that matters even more:
What happens after someone finds you?
Because traffic alone isn't the goal.
Someone can find your business at the top of Google and still leave if your website doesn't build trust, answer their questions, or make it easy to take the next step.
That's why we look beyond rankings.
We also care about whether:
The right people are finding the business
The website clearly communicates the offer
Visitors can easily take action
Reviews reinforce credibility
Search visibility is growing for meaningful terms
The business is attracting qualified opportunities — not simply more website traffic
SEO gets you found.
Your brand, website, reputation, and customer experience help you get chosen.
Proof Over Promise
There are plenty of companies willing to promise a business the #1 spot on Google.
We won’t.
No ethical SEO company can guarantee exactly where Google will rank a website.
What we can do is look at the evidence.
We can identify what’s holding a website back, understand where opportunities exist, build a stronger foundation, create useful content, improve local visibility, and continue adjusting based on what the data shows us.
Those are the moments we love sharing because they show what thoughtful, consistent work can produce.
Not a shortcut.
Not a guarantee.
Real progress we can actually see.
Do You Know How Your Business Is Showing Up?
Most business owners don’t.
You may know that you have a website.
You may have a Google Business Profile.
You may even be paying someone for SEO.
But do you know what Google actually sees?
Do you know which searches your business is appearing for?
Do you know whether your visibility is improving?
And do you know what should be prioritized next?
That’s where we like to start.
Before recommending more marketing, more content, more ads, or a new website, we want to understand the foundation first.
What’s working? What isn’t? And where is the best opportunity to improve?
Because good marketing shouldn't start with doing more.
It should start with knowing what matters.
